HOW TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE FCCPC

How to File a Complaint with the FCCPC: A Step-by-Step Guide

Paid for something that never arrived? Got a faulty product, an unfair charge or a refund that won’t come? Nigerian consumers have a government agency to turn to: the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Here is how to use it.

Step 1: Complain to the business first

Don’t skip this. The FCCPC’s guidance is that a complaint should go to the provider of the product or service first, and then to the FCCPC as soon as possible after your rights are breached, especially within the warranty period. Write to the business by email or letter, state the remedy you want, and keep copies of everything. Phone calls leave no proof.

Step 2: Gather your evidence

Before you open the form, collect:

  • Receipts, invoices, bank alerts or transfer records
  • Agreements, order confirmations and warranty documents
  • Screenshots of adverts, chats and emails
  • Photos or videos of the fault
  • Your earlier complaint to the business and any reply

Step 3: Pick your channel

The Commission built an online complaint system, and you can sign up through the FCCPC website or the FCCPC Consumer Complaint App, available on the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. You can also use other channels. Complaints can still be sent by email, in person or by letter.

  • Phone: 0805 600 2020 or 0805 600 3030
  • Email: contact@fccpc.gov.ng
  • Head office: 23 Jimmy Carter Street, Asokoro, Abuja
  • Regional offices: one report lists offices in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Awka, Osogbo, Minna, Bauchi, Katsina and Kano. That list may have changed, so call before you travel.

Step 4: Create your account and fill in the form

If you use the portal, sign up and create a complaint account, then submit your complaint and attach supporting documents such as receipts, agreements and correspondence. You will be asked to choose the complaint category, give it a title, describe the problem, select the company and location, state the amount involved and attach any pictures or videos.

Tips for a strong submission:

  • Keep the description factual, with dates, amounts and what you asked the business to do.
  • State the outcome you want, such as a refund of a specific amount.
  • Double-check phone number and email, because that is how you will be reached.

Step 5: Save your tracking code

Once you submit, a tracking code is generated and sent to your registered email. Keep it. You will need it to follow up. Your complaint account stays active after the case closes, so you can use it again later.

Step 6: Follow up and be patient

A complaint can be resolved quickly or take longer, depending on its nature. The FCCPC also decides for itself whether to investigate, so a clear, well-documented complaint helps. If you hear nothing for a while, call or email and quote your tracking code. Using the FCCPC is also free of charge.

Special case: loan apps that harass you

For digital lenders that threaten you or message your contacts, the FCCPC has said you can report by email, message it on X, or use the “File a Complaint” section of its website, giving the loan app’s name, its contact details, the loan amount and a description of the problem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going to the FCCPC before contacting the business
  • Losing receipts and payment records
  • Writing long, emotional complaints with no dates or amounts
  • Forgetting to keep your tracking code
  • Giving up after one follow-up

Conclusion

Being refused a refund is frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the matter. The process is simple: complain to the business first, gather your evidence, file with the FCCPC through the portal, app, email, phone or one of its offices, then keep your tracking code and follow up. A calm, well-documented complaint is hard to ignore, and it does more than help you. Every complaint that is filed properly helps the FCCPC spot unfair practices and pushes businesses to treat all consumers better.

So don’t stay silent and don’t write off your money. Your voice matters, and filing a complaint is how you use it.
